Lucy Beck
Lucy Beck is a Tucker High School graduate from Tucker, GA. Beck has always enjoyed science and math, and she was part of Tucker High School’s first STEM cohort. She is currently a senior biology major at Georgia College & State University. As a college freshman, Beck joined the service organization known as Gamma Sigma Sigma, and she has contributed over 100 hours of volunteer service in the Milledgeville community through park clean ups, volunteering at local animal shelters, and various projects with organizations such as March of Dimes and American Cancer Society. This year, Beck will serve as Treasurer for Gamma Sigma Sigma and Vice President for Tri Beta Biological Honor Society. Eager to get involved in research at Georgia College, Beck began working with Dr. Al Mead to identify turtle fossils from Pliocene localities in Georgia to characterize the biodiversity of these localities throughout time. Beck is a dedicated student, and she is passionate about learning at the molecular level. Her favorite courses thus far have been Cellular Physiology, Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry. Her passion for learning is evident in her academic success, as Beck has been inducted into Tri Beta Biological Honor Society and recognized on the President’s List five times. Outside of studying, Beck enjoys fishing, playing guitar, and playing strategic board games. Her interest in cell biology and biochemistry drove Beck to pursue experience working in the Liang Lab, as she thoroughly enjoys learning the structural and chemical properties behind protein function. Beck is excited to be part of the Liang Lab team this summer, and she looks forward to contributing to the ongoing research in the Liang Lab. After graduating from Georgia College, Beck plans on gaining more hands-on experience in a laboratory setting before seeking a higher degree in biology.
